When we don’t know how to respond to a question at the moment, we’re tempted to hide away our ignorance or lack of confidence by trying to give a response right away. But it’s actually robbing the other person of a better response, if we’re not humble enough to admit that, “I don’t know how to answer to that right now.”
So, instead of trying to look smart for a moment, resist the temptation by saying, “I’ll respond to that next time.” And make sure that the follow-up happens.
By doing so, you’re actually putting yourself on the hook. You also hold yourself accountable for giving a well-thought-of response when the next engagement or meeting comes.
It doesn’t hurt to tell others that “you don’t know” (yet). But make sure you make up for it by doing the work, now that you know what you do not know.
