Have you ever wondered how different memories cause us different emotions upon recall?
I recently recounted my first solo flight abroad, and it’s amazing how I retell it with joy in contrast to the anxiety I felt while I was still in the experience.
From Life is in the Transition:
Memories, unlike what I learned about them as a child, are not stable–neat little packages stored away in our brains like keepsakes we pull out of the closet when we need them and stuff back when we don’t. Memories are living, breathing entities that change with each summoning. Every time we recall a memory, we recall it in a slightly different way.
So if you fear going through memory lane just because it might reawaken the emotions you used to have back when you’re still going through it, you’d be surprised how they differ from what they once were.
And often, they don’t hurt as much as they used to.
