When I went out this morning to buy some snacks, I had two competing motives: I wanted something sweet, but I also thought I should buy something that would maximize both my husband’s and my happiness. And with the constraint of having just enough money to buy either, I went with the “should,” but my “want” did not disappear and remained an unresolved craving.
Then, on my way home, I was on Instagram and saw a Snickers ad. You know what happened next? The ad gave my existing, suppressed desire a reason to resurface. It let me reframe my indulgence as a reasonable choice, removing the need for justification; all I could think about was buying Snickers once I got off the bus.
The ad gave me a permission slip to complete a choice I’ve already made halfway through the morning.
