I was too naïve to understand the faces of power. I learned the hard way that just because it wears familiar clothing doesn’t always mean it isn’t the kind that controls, manipulates, and abuses. Years of being an outsider were somehow a protection from all the malice that happens on the inside. It was pure bliss to be ignorant because I was able to perform what was expected of me, while seeing everybody as good and kind.
But a disease you try to hide, though never cure, always spreads. And it was just a matter of time before I got a whiff of the dead. There’s always an invisible enemy, us vs. them, and for you to remain pure is to isolate yourself from the rest. Those in power decides what you should and shouldn’t do, even decides what kind of books and knowledge is good for you. Who gave them power to decide over my life? They say a higher authority.
The wrong thing I did was just submit, even when every part of me protested. And I was too late to realize it was spiritual abuse. So now, I bear the scars and still cower in fear. What if I recognize the poison too late again?
I still fear not knowing. But I think naming it is where I have to start.
