Taste as a time machine

Following the New Year celebration, we still had some guava left, and to keep them from spoiling, I decided to eat them. While sharing was an option, nobody wanted to have them, so I ended up eating them all by myself. What’s fascinating is that while I was still slicing them, I started recalling childhood memories. The moment I started munching on them, the crisp started playing music in my ears, and its sweet, juicy flesh stirred familiar emotions and memories.

Back then, there were weekends when I was left alone at home while my mother worked and my sister studied in the neighboring city. Every time I went hungry, without having any money or snacks provided at home, I was forced to satiate myself by going out to our backyard and check for some edible guavas. Most of the time, picking a good one was a challenge because fruit flies had already spoiled most of them. If it’s a good day, I could enjoy one, but I’d end up throwing the rest I’ve picked because they only looked good on the outside while being worm-infested on the inside.

As I shared my recollection with my sister, she laughed at the memory because she had the same experience with me. Just by tasting a guava fruit again, we traveled back through time like it was just yesterday.
