Chants and groupthink

Have you ever found yourself a part of a rally that you believe supports a cause? Don’t we want to be a part of something bigger than ourselves?

While listening to the loud music playing at a party, I couldn’t deny how my heart beat with the rhythm. And looking around the crowd, most people I know are jumping up and down with the song.

Then the moment one of them screams a chant, the crowd seems to pick up fast and chime in without questions about its meaning. It’s as if the words don’t matter.

It’s as if what matters is that you are one with the crowd.

And that leads me to think about anger circulating online.

Thanks to the miracle of technology, I can feel angst about every problem in the known universe, so long as those problems can be described in words or pictures.
