Reflections on becoming

Have you ever?

in

Have you ever raised chickens, ducks, and goats in your backyard?

If you haven’t, here’s what a typical day looks like:

  • You wake up at first light
  • You let the chickens and the ducks out of their cages
  • Relocate the goats
  • Feed them (like giving them some breakfast) and give them water
  • Scoop poop (and lots of poop)
  • Attend to the goats throughout the day (depends on their complaint)
  • Gather all the chickens and the ducks and the goats for another feed (like giving them dinner)
  • Keep them back to the cages for the evening
  • Repeat everything the next day

Perhaps, going back to this kind of lifestyle keeps me from wanting to go back to the metro (back to the concrete jungle).

Living back at home isn’t laidback. Far from it!

But the liberty to be one with all things natural, spending time with animals (with real needs), seeing a lot of greens (and watering them lest they die), and spending time with our dogs and cats give me a sense of responsibility beyond what a job placement could offer.

Of course, I need to keep the lights on.

But sometimes, I wish I don’t have to choose between the two.

I don’t want to live for the holidays.

Instead, I want to live.

Have you ever truly lived?
