Causes of stress

1–2 minutes

Feeling stressed lately?

There are times I feel stressed, too, and I wanted to know how to handle stress.

But what is stress exactly?

Stress results when demand is greater than your ability to address it.

From the course I took on building personal resilience, these are what causes stress:

1. Time demands. Time stressors relate to both real and perceived pressures associated with our use and perception of time.

2. Encounter demands. Interpersonal encounter stressors are linked to negative interactions with people associated with the workplace. They also produce fight or flight responses.

3. Situation demands. Long delays and traffic in commutes can be situational stressors.

4. Anticipation demands. Changing and uncertain environments can be anticipation stressors.

Knowing what kind of demands make you stressed helps you focus on the life areas you need to address. If you think you are helpless during stressful situations, think again. Why? Because you are not someone who only reacts to stimuli. You can actually create your environment to manage the demands that stress you out.
