Reflections on becoming

Experience, trends, and other things we can learn from a hairdresser

in

As I was talking with the hairdresser while admiring his expertise, I began to ask him questions like:

  1. How long have you been doing this work?
  2. How do you upskill for the latest trends?
  3. How’s the business going, comparing then and now?

And with these simple questions which, I believe, engaged him enough to tell us stories about his career of 20+ years, I learned some things like:

  1. You need to be aware of what’s trending on your field (if applicable, such as hairdressing), so that you can cater to the changing demands of your customers. Keep up to date especially when it comes to trends.
  2. Gaining experience works to your favor in the long run. And other people are willing to pay for your knowledge and insights.
  3. People used to rely on television about the latest hairstyle trends. Now, people know what they want just by showing a picture of it.

As a matter of fact, I really did bring a photo of a haircut I want to have. Perhaps, you do too.

And no matter what career you are in, it sure pays to be up to date with what’s new in your field. In a way, by observing signals of change, you will be able to prepare on how to deliver your work better in the face of the ever-changing work culture and environment.

Preferences also come and go. So if your sector is mostly affected by this, then you need to be agile in adapting to this changing demand. But you also need to be wise enough to focus on what you really want to achieve in order to help the very people you seek to serve.

Because your experience works in your favor in the long run; time is your ally.
