Reflections on becoming

Sense of control

in

Of course, we are not in control all of the time. But just by having a sense of control in some things already makes so much difference.

Can you remember the time when you were given a chance to have a say in what happens to you? It felt daunting but at the same time, liberating.

From the book Life Is in the Transitions: Mastering Change at Any Age:

The psychologist Bessel van der Kolk defines agency as “the feeling of being in charge of your life: knowing where you stand, knowing that you have a say in what happens to you, knowing that you have some ability to shape your circumstance.” People who exhibit agency have been shown to be happier and healthier, and have a higher quality of life.

So if you are in authority, it might be of good use to you to think about the concept of agency. You sure do want it, and it’s the same for those who work under you too.

I guess the most helpful reminder for us, regardless of our position and authority, is to treat others as human as possible. Because we are all human beings.

But this is in no way an endorsement to do freely against what is moral.
