During any period of major disruption or crisis, there are four patters of change. And they are as follows:
Growth
This pattern of change is a story of more. Current trends and conditions, both good and bad, continue to grow as they have in the past – but now, at a faster rate. It’s like someone poured accelerants on a fire.
Constraint
This pattern of change is a story of accepting new limits. It’s when we agree to new restrictions or new kinds of self-discipline. Often, it’s the story of desperate times that call for desperate measures. It’s a story of individual sacrifices for the greater good.
Collapse
This pattern of change is is a story of tragic failure. It’s the failure of human systems to overcome inherent weaknesses or divisions. It’s a failure to prevent chaos. In this pattern of change, major social systems are strained beyond the breaking point, causing widespread suffering and social disarray.
Transformation
This pattern of change is a story of a world-changing insight. It’s a story that stretches our imagination. It challenges our assumptions about how things work. It resolves big dilemmas in unexpected ways. It often gives us hope for the future.
