Reflections on becoming

We remember generosity

in

Think of that person from childhood you received a gift from.

You might have forgotten their name or just remember vaguely about what they look like. But surprisingly, you can remember the feeling of that moment when you received that gift from their hands.

Was it the smile from within you that you remember? The light and warm feeling of the budding joy that’s growing inside you?

One night, my three-year-old niece named the people she liked best. And one thing that struck me was that she mentioned a particular person just because she often receives gifts from that person. Whenever she says her name, she remembers all her presents as if that person is the gift herself.

Often, as adults, I wonder how we have forgotten what it feels to be a child. It is as if our childhood is only a thing of the past, separate from what made us who we are today.

But seeing other people remember what it feels like to be one, I observed how they abound in generosity towards children. Their thoughtfulness not only extends a day or year but a lifetime.

So if you get a chance to show generosity to children, do it. Rest assured, your deed will never be forgotten even if your face or your name won’t be remembered anymore.

Not only will you feel elated to do so, but you will change somebody’s childhood for the better, forever.
