Two hundred names, and most of them strangers now

Old rotary phone ringing with 3 new messages and 2 missed calls, modern smartphone showing 5 new messages, 12 likes, 4 alerts, and 20+ notifications

Today, I decided to declutter my phonebook and ended up deleting ~200 contacts. I was even surprised that I didn’t recognize some of the names anymore. Some of the phone numbers were ones I acquired and saved back in college—numbers of classmates I haven’t been in contact with since graduation.

I can’t imagine how different I was a decade ago; someone who texted a lot. And phone calls! Now, it feels like calling someone is offensive.

So much has changed that I barely text anyone at all, except for official appointments.

The constant connectivity has been taking a toll on me these days, overwhelming me with the faux conversations I have with people. I miss talking with others face-to-face, just for the sheer pleasure of spending time together.

Maybe everyone misses it too. But missing something and making time for it are two very different things.
