Reflections on becoming

Try things out

in

What’s the antidote for “I don’t know what to do?”

Try things out.

Staying in a place of not knowing what to do is indeed a dark place to be.

One memory I had was when I had a hint of where I should be going for my research idea, but I didn’t know how to get there. I lacked the skills and tools, and not knowing where and how to begin was starting to paralyze me mentally and physically (a.k.a. I began to procrastinate).

When I started to become unsettled (or maybe I was disoriented) by the newness of the experience—and the familiarity of mental paralysis—I reminded myself of my go-to phrase “right tools for the right job” and started to ask God to give me wisdom.

The first idea that came to mind was, “What do you have?” like when God instructed Moses on how to liberate His people. So, I was liberated from the pit I was stuck in for some time and started to assess everything I had (from skills to resources).

And you know what?

Crawling out of the pit was a drag. The process felt so slow, but I tried to be patient with myself, like when we try to blink slowly and allow our eyes to readjust after seeing the bright morning light.

The next thing I knew, I was already in the zone and in the motion of making progress. And that happened just because I decided to try things out.
