Reflections on becoming

Sometimes, stories just want to be told

in

You might have wondered how I can keep writing about anything. Because for sure, I must be using some system to keep this blog alive, right?

My initial plan for this blog is to write daily, which could be about work, life, and the future. How did I end up with these main categories? After lots and lots of experimentation. I’ve been writing online since 2010 (still exploring the space of publicizing your work with anonymous readers globally), blogging since 2014 (more about life), committed to regularly writing long posts in 2019 (about work and life), and after all my futures thinking classes in 2020, I started to write about those topics too.

The main goal I had was to really write frequently because I wanted to get better at writing. And I found that the only way to get better at it is to continuously practice writing, and as Seth Godin puts it:

Flow is the result of effort. The muse shows up when we do the work. Not the other way around.

The Practice: Shipping Creative Work by Seth Godin

I agree with Seth about the muse showing up when we do the work. Because I committed myself to writing regularly, I became more attentive to whatever was happening around me and within me. And by paying attention to stories that want to be told, I was able to find things that I consider worth writing about.

What I decided to write about doesn’t necessarily mean that they would also appeal to you. I couldn’t please everybody. But to some people, especially those who silently and secretly read through these blog posts whenever they find the time, my writing inspires them. And I am writing these things for them.

So, if you are here for the first time, thank you so much for making time to read through this blog post. You can find out more about all the things I have written here.

Sometimes, stories just want to be told. I may not be the best, but I am trying to get better at telling these stories, one blog post at a time. Okay, I will include the storytelling skills I am developing in research writing, too, because that sure does count!
