What is work?

in

When I was in college, I thought that work is something you are obliged to do even your heart is not up to it. Years later, while I was trying to understand the implications of a particular law affecting the energy sector, I realized that work is what you choose to do.

These are the things that may define what work is:

  1. Work may be about salary (at first), but once your basic needs are met, work becomes what you decide to continue doing.
  2. Work is where you put in emotional labor on top of the physical and mental.
  3. Work is the uniform you choose to wear.
  4. Work is an eight-hour (or plus hours) shift (and for some, this is a sad work).
  5. Work is what you choose to do to produce something you value (and for most people, this is a happy work).

So choose the work you want to see yourself doing.

Because no line separates work and life. In most cases, the one you want to be disassociated for a time is the work you are not really invested in. You are just there for the money. If only circumstance permits, you’d instead do the work you love doing.

Most of the time, work becomes you, and you become your work too.

You are what you do.
