Reflections on becoming

The dog I saw

in

When I was traveling one afternoon, my eyes wandered on the sidewalk and stopped at the sight of a dog lying on the ground.

It looked just like a dog lying on its side, actually. Nothing special. However, I wondered how it continued to move its hind leg as if wriggling (or perhaps, writhing). But it never moved one bit when a motorcycle drove behind it.

No, it never reacted at all.

It continued to wriggle its hind leg in a rhythm, one-two-three.

Something was off, yes, and as my eyes scanned the place quickly, I never understood what I saw.

But there it was in plain sight.

A pool of blood spread across the side adjacent to the dog, who was still writhing in a spasm. Perhaps, it’s what’s left of the dog after all. The last of the life that is slowly draining out of it.
