Rediscovering a new browser experience with SigmaOS

in

Last year, I started using Mastodon after Twitter (now X) stopped supporting WordPress integration. Since I still wanted my blog posts shared across platforms aside from Facebook, I created an account on Mastodon and started to learn the basics about the Fediverse—but I didn’t really go deep. Knowing how to work around the tech was good enough for me because WordPress is where I mostly spend my time to write my thoughts anyway.

Occasionally, I read the news from Mastodon. It felt less obtrusive—it only depends on how many people are talking about it—which allowed me to explore niche topics.

One morning, while on Mastodon, I read about how we “deserve a better browser than Google Chrome.” The news reminded me of a memory from 2019: a friend asked me why I would rather use DuckDuckGo as a search engine than Google, and I have never looked back since. I tried using Google browser on MacOS too, but it was eating the RAM so much I went back to Safari and been using it for more than two years now, without complaints.

Still, that day, I continued reading about Google browser alternatives because I felt like I had time to explore. I read about Arc browser and its “‘catastrophic’ security flaw” and eventually stumbled upon this YouTube video about another browser: SigmaOS.

Since it gave me the familiar Safari vibes and even Notion, I jumped in, created an account, and enjoyed the sleek, focused feel and keyboard shortcuts! I couldn’t emphasize the keyboard shortcuts enough: I can snap things away with just a button or summon them whenever I wish. And just as how we can use the spacebar in macOS to search for things, we can do the same way for SigmaOS!

It feels like that the browser and my computer are one and the same now.

I enjoyed organizing my workspaces, and it even excited me because I could finally group all the sites I occasionally visit, leaving behind the memory of a cluttered browser with so many pinned tabs. I also liked how they renamed tabs into “tasks” you could just check when done, because visiting sites as a working professional really feel like tasks in a big project—I often stay in my computer for work (or writing blog posts)—so the name “tasks” seems fitting.

I grouped the web pages I often used for work and locked the Google documents I’ve been working on for my research paper. I also grouped the web pages I use for my sideline job and other tasks I regularly do over the internet.

And the way I’ve organized them felt like organizing my virtual space where I spent most of my day working, making their slogan, “The new home for your internet,” resonates deeply with me.

It has been a great user experience for me, without the lags, even with so many tasks tucked away and locked in my sidebar. ✨

Available only on macOS, you can download it for free here. After creating an account and performing the initial setup, you’re all set and free to make it “the new home for your internet.”
