Things never get done because I keep holding them off for later.
I’ll do that later. For now, let me enjoy the moment by fiddling with this colorful and entertaining small device—just for a few minutes. Or wait—I think I have an hour to spare. Let it hypnotize me with loads of information I don’t really need right now, but it makes me feel good and informed.
And being informed makes me feel like I am doing something (though, in reality, we know that just being informed doesn’t hold water).
But once the fog lifted and my senses returned, I realized the gravity of my situation. I had settled for a life of mindless consumption, allowing myself to rot away to senseless pursuits that do not add value to my life or those around me. I had let the allure of instant gratification deceive me into believing I was doing something, when in reality, I was doing nothing.
What a deceiving little thing.
If you let it rule you, it will just take your day away and leave you wondering why you’re stuck in a rut and without purpose.
There’s more to life than just merely consuming stuff.
How to break the cycle?
Start your day with purpose. What do you want to accomplish today?
Even the night before, list everything you want to accomplish the next day. And when there’s something you can do right now, don’t put it off. Because the allure of instant gratification might win you over, and the next thing you know, the endless cat and dog videos (cooking videos, travel vlogs, conspiracy theories, political debates, and other content you can think of) have already taken away your hours.
