Everyday Stories, Lived

Hello iOS! 👋

in

I may be decades too late, but as someone who just entered this well-trodden space of the iOS ecosystem, I finally had the experience of what it’s like to use a minimalist but powerful device.

I never said goodbye to my Android phone. In fact, I’m using both the Android and iPhone for separate reasons. One is for general use (like work and connectivity), while the other is for focused interactions.

Now, I can have the liberty of moving away from social media without pulling away from social media. Does that make sense? Well, there have been so many times I just want to disconnect, but in this hyperconnected world, it’s just impossible!

But then, I realized I wanted to cultivate meaningful connections out of the noisy public square of social media. So, with the opportunity to start anew, I did not install any social media apps on my iPhone. This means I only use communications solely for meaningful interactions with the people I care about and who’d love to hear from me.

With the iOS environment, I can finally share media with family and closest friends (who genuinely care about my whereabouts) without installing third-party apps! They had been users for years, and I was the last to enter the space.

It’s been five days since I used the device, and I won’t return to not using it. It’s also been five days since I finally untethered myself from scrolling mindlessly (wasting time) and focused on doing work that keeps my brain nourished and the lights on.

But perhaps, if I didn’t have another device to house all the clutter, I would end up in the same doom-scrolling habit, even when using an iPhone. I’m just glad it isn’t the case this time.
