Having the right tool for the right job could make all the difference.
Yes, sticky notes helped me tick off boxes last year. But having a compact monthly+daily planner this year, which I could bring to work and anywhere I go, helps me keep track of my days and weeks and plan my months ahead.
I can now go beyond short-term plans, such as scheduling trips months ahead!
Something about tangible planners still makes planning my life ahead more definite. Sure, what I feel doesn’t necessarily reflect your feelings about it.
Speaking of planning my life with planners, my sister used to tell me how she sees me like a robot, always planning my day and the day after that and other kinds of stuff. Okay, yes, I may be am. As I carefully examined the thought, I thought she might mean to tell me I work like a computer program executing commands, which sounds right.
So why do I do what I do? Well, planning my day ahead and in writing allows me to commit to things that I have the heart to say yes to, instead of just seeing how they go and letting myself go where the wind blows.
For me, planning my activities gives me control over what happens in my life and allows me to tread the waters the way I want to go.
Because I decide how my day goes, I get a sense of fulfillment when I accomplish something I want to achieve. And this sense of fulfillment feels like an incentive, a good feeling, a dopamine rush.
So when I’ve brought my plans to completion, I’d be glad to plan, implement, and achieve all over again. It just feels so good, and I feel in control, like the captain of my ship with my hands on the rudder.
