Reflections on becoming

Finishing a pie (a project management story)

in

My husband and I have worked on wedding planning and preparation for four months, and it’s incredible how we summed them all up into three boxes: one for the bride, the groom, and the reception. And as I looked at the boxes stacked up the night before the wedding, I was amazed by how everything that felt so huge and overwhelming was now neatly packed in stored in boxes that felt small and manageable.

I can’t help but wonder, “Are we missing anything at all?”

Thinking about everything we’ve gone through in those four short months, the planning and preparation have stretched beyond that period. Personal desires and wants have been thought about for months and years before the four-month sprint. Meaning before we dive into those four months, we already know what we want.

And because we already knew what to look for, the four months were primarily spent looking for wedding suppliers that could meet what we wanted for a wedding. Here are some things I learned from the experience:

  • An established system streamlines planning and execution.
  • Choosing the right people to work with, people with the same vision as you do indicates whether your project would be a success or a flop.
  • Having the right project management tool to keep everything intact makes the work manageable.

We constantly monitored various tasks depending on status (not yet started, in progress, and done) and logged in all data we consider essential such as finances. Aside from these things, we also created pages for notes and trackers using a combination of Excel sheets, Google Sheets, and Notion.

If you are working on project management, or if you want your wiki, docs, and projects in one virtual workspace, I recommend that you explore the Notion tool, which you can access for free. You can even utilize their education plus plan when you sign up using your academic email. The Notion app gave me and my husband control over everything we wanted to measure and manage for our wedding planning. We were also able to evaluate all the ins and outs because Notion made it easier for us.

What started as a big pie (our wedding planning and preparation), we were able to chew on slice by slice. And we’re now two weeks married.
