Habitual liars learned to lie to themselves first. And when lying became an automatic response every time they wanted to escape the reality of the consequences of their actions, they next learned to lie to others.
I remember looking at the eyes of a liar. And it’s incredible how she could answer me with a lie after another without wavering. I know she is telling lies because I saw what really happened with my eyes wide open and in broad daylight. She has totally deceived herself and listening to her, you can hear how she is actually trying to convince herself.
We lie to others to protect our reputations, and we lie to ourselves because it hurts so much to look reality in the face.
As A.W. Tozer said, “Of all forms of deception, self-deception is the most deadly, and of all deceived persons the self-deceived are the least likely to discover the fraud.”
