Reflections on becoming

I only want to open the can with a knife

in

I first heard from Seth Godin about the adoption curve, and it has never left my mind since. And I don’t even stay in one group; instead, I find myself an early adopter for some situations, while most of the time, an early or late adopter.

Here’s a helpful resource that discusses the types of adopters in detail.

Working as a researcher means training myself to be open to new ways of doing things. And being a part of a research team also translates to a kind of openness to new ideas and learning.

But do you know how painful it is to work with a laggard?

It’s like handing them a can opener to make the work faster, but they’d act insulted and tell you in the face, “I just want to open the can with my knife. Always has, always will be.”

Being tradition-bound often gets in the way of breakthroughs. And those who are never afraid to venture into the unknown often get the best share of whatever is to gain.
