Can you imagine commitments?
And when complacency gets the best of you, it’s easy to just park and be where you are most comfortable. And it’s not just about stepping up and fulfilling your responsibilities. It’s also about being accountable for what’s entrusted to you.
I can remember an evening when I felt so mentally exhausted from work, and my body told me to take a rest. But I was still two hours away from our scheduled recording and was already mentally rehearsing my excuse for absence.
As I considered bailing out of the engagement I had to attend to, I thought about our leader, who had just arrived at his destination, 2,000 kilometers away from home. Sure, he was as tired as I was, but he chose to show up not because he felt like it but because he had to.
And that’s when I thought about how selfish I would be if I decided not to show up.
I learned that a leader sets the standards and that it also takes a team that cares to follow the leader. So often, team members just watch how their leaders decide on things. And then, they will follow whatever the leader does, even the unconscious decisions they make.
It takes integrity and character to be a leader someone follows.
