Reflections on becoming

Letter no. 23

in

Dear reader from the future,

Today is the last day of our country’s election campaign, with the elections on May 9, 2022. Aside from communities expressing their support for their candidates through public demonstrations, they also extend their support towards social media. Unfortunately, politics has divided the country. But, perhaps, it’s the way it’s supposed to be because this is democracy.

While the Commission on Elections starts destroying defective, testing ballots, the country will elect a new leader come Monday.

Tension is mounting up among our people too. I can remember this election-related killing that really rocked the news in 2009. And just recently, another that is close to home.

People are becoming passionate about the candidate they support. And would you imagine how a national election could tear families apart too? Yes, it’s becoming a thing, and the country is even more divided.

What is becoming of us?

I may have not written to you about the ongoing tension between Russia and Ukraine, but news has it that the Russian President may soon officially declare war on Ukraine as soon as May 9.

It depends on where you live, but it seems that May 9 would be a day that could change the Philippines (due to national elections) and the whole world (should war be declared).

Is the world you live in a lot different and peaceful than my world today? And do you still even have elections or wars?

Your letter writer from the past,
Jessa
