Birthdays are a good time to remember how time keeps on moving forward. And no matter what you did in this short lifetime, what remains important is how you have kept your integrity intact throughout your years.
When I was a kid, I marvelled at how old people kept reminding us of the importance of maintaining a good name.
A good name is better than precious perfume …

And I thought keeping a good name was easy.
No, it wasn’t.
Because the world has its way of stripping you off of your innocence. It’s true that as you grow up, you do away with childish things.
When I was a child, I spoke and thought and reasoned as a child. But when I grew up, I put away childish things.

And as you gain understanding and grow in years, you begin to see the reality of the human condition. When left to our own devices, we always head to destruction, always seeking what’s best for our tribe, us vs. them.
Birthdays are a good reminder that we are like grass that withers.
Grass withers and flowers fade when the LORD sends the wind blowing over them. People are no more enduring than grass.

But acknowledging Jesus in our lives helps us see that physical death is not the end of everything.
