Every time we begin a project we have never done before, we feel incompetent and it doesn’t feel good (at all).
And because of this discomfort, most of us hide instead.
But for the few of us who decided to show up despite the tension we are feeling inside, to those of us who chose to embrace the discomfort (and often pain) that comes along with learning something new, we grow.
Because like metamorphosis, we change, and we change for the better.
And this is true learning. Where we choose to enroll ourselves in a journey to become better, even it costs us our pride.
Because it takes humility to acknowledge that complacency costs us our future if we get too comfortable with our current state.
From The Practice: Shipping Creative Work:
True learning (as opposed to education) is a voluntary experience that requires tension and discomfort (the persistent feeling of incompetence as we get better at a skill.)
