Let me put it straight first.
Remote work is not for everyone, but it could be for you.
From Employees Are Quitting Instead of Giving Up Working From Home:
“Working inside of a building really does restrict time a lot more than you think,” he said. “A lot of people are afraid of the cycle where you work and work and work — and then you die.”
Okay, perhaps some of us are secretly thinking about it too. And maybe, some of you work so hard so that you can afford to maximize your leave credits and be somewhere else, checking off your bucket list.
To be honest, even if I knew that you can do remote work, I still embraced the idea that the only way to have an income is by getting a job where you should be physically there.
And the reason why we really never thought about it pre-pandemic is that we simply don’t have time to do so.
Probably, it’s the workplace autonomy that you’re seeking, which led you to read this blog post (thanks for your attention, by the way).
So, here are some of the things I learned after doing flexible remote work for almost half a year now:
- You can still deliver work even if you do it at home (provided that what the employer care about is your output and not being virtually present from 8 to 5 just so they can monitor you).
- Trust is essential.
- It takes a reliable and responsible person to excel at remote work.
- There’s now time for family.
- You can now spend time with your pets while doing work.
- You can work for people or companies all around the world.
- You need to really offer something valuable that employers would be willing to pay for (especially now that you are competing globally).
- You can run personal errands without a need for filing absence instead of letting them wait until later the day or the weekends.
I have to admit that it’s also tough thriving in a remote work setup if you don’t invest in upskilling.
And just a word of caution, if you’re just working for the money, it would be very challenging to find the motivation to do work that matters, remote work or not.
