If you’ve been thinking lately about how other people get so creative and you pale in contrast, you might have assumed that you simply don’t have the talent gene.
You assumed that you need to be like Iron Man with a strike of genius before you can come up with the most innovative and novel ideas. Well, guess what? Even Elon Musk has a community that influences his creativity too.
Creativity is barely generated in isolation.
And did you know?
Talent is actually the “outcome of immense amounts of structured, purposeful practice.”
From the book The Creative Curve:
…research shows that exceptional talent is not always the result of winning the genetic lottery, but instead the outcome of immense amounts of structured, purposeful practice. While the notion of giftedness stems from Lewis Terman’s popularization of IQ tests, research since then reveals that people of all backgrounds have more creative potential than they realize, and that IQ is not correlated with creative potential for people of average or higher intelligence.
So if you’ve already heard about the adage that says, “If you don’t use it, you lose it,” then it’s time to reconsider your excuses about pursuing your goals.
Because there’s always room for growth if you are just willing enough to put in the work it requires.
Simply put, I write daily because I want to be good at it. And even if I don’t feel like writing, I still push myself to come up with something for the day. Because I learned that consistency is as essential as your desire to be better with whatever you want to contribute to the culture you’re in.
Stop making excuses.
Do the work.
