I recently attended an online event, and I noticed how the guest speakers begin their talk with an extra-long greeting. I used to wonder why each of the speakers has to name other notable speakers every single time. But then, a thought just hit me.
They do what they do to signal that they noticed other prominent figures in the event.
To notice means that you are not self-absorbed. That you are humble enough to acknowledge them in public.
Often, those who can name many prominent people in the event signal just how high their status is over everyone else.
