Doing work that matters

in

“Eating ice cream is easy. Making something that matters is hard.”

from the book Linchpin: Are You Indispensable?

Most of the time, you never even think about it. Ice cream is ice cream, and if you don’t like ice cream, you are probably lying.

And yes, there’s the least resistance when it comes to doing things that never pass an afterthought.

However, when it comes to doing the work you’re supposed to do to exact change, excuses may begin to slip up without further notice. And as they compile on top of another, the next thing you know, you took a detour from the path you’re supposed to be heading.

This sounds like all the unkempt new year’s resolutions you wrote down on your notes and solemnly promised to fulfill and accomplish. If you do not stand up against the fear of falling short, failing, or being rejected, and if you do not see the rewards when you do the work and the work that matters, you are only another excuse away to not do it at all.

Another unfulfilled potential.
