Reflections on becoming

On selling products

in

One morning, while I was out in a bank, I came across an unexpected encounter.

Seeing the amount in my check, the friendly teller suggested where I should wisely put my money in. He told me that he’d like to have their bank insurance introduced to me while he processes my check. Without anything I’d be spending my time with, I said yes.

While I was waiting back on the seats provided for customers, I observed the social distancing guidelines. And then, a lady with a cheery voice called my attention. She said that her name is Pat and that she is the Financial Solutions Consultant of the insurance the teller told me earlier.

After our quick introductions, she then started with the importance of saving money and what their bank offers. She mentioned me products that were quite familiar to me. You see, she is not the first person who talked to me about handling money.

But I did not zone out listening to her. I looked into her gestures, how she presents her ideas, and how she deals with me as her prospective client.

Here’s what I observed:

  1. She presented herself as someone deeply convinced with what she is saying.
  2. She talks smart and confident.
  3. She looks at you in the eyes while telling you the differences in their products.
  4. She engages you with the way she presents her ideas.
  5. She is direct when answering questions.

Do you think I was passively listening while she was talking?

Of course not! I seized the moment, asking questions, and testing her. She did not disappoint.

I think her pitch lasted for about five minutes, but it was a well-spent five minutes with her. She is an excellent storyteller. And maybe, what I liked about her was what she did next after wrapping up.

“If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.” And then she added that I should really consider saving my money in the bank.

She never at least tried to push me to get any product right then and there. No. She was professional enough to let me think through what I just learned and digest everything. She was taking her time by just planting a seed of idea in me.

I hope it goes the same for all the people who have anything to sell.

Because people can sense if a person is just out for a sale or a commission.
